6:00 PM - 7:30 PMSimon Rosenblatt Board Room & ZoomJoin Professor Jen Roth-Gordon for a 3-week series of discussions on the important topic of race. This will be an informal class, with lots of time for discussion and questions and no prior background expected.
All are welcome to learn more about race relations and racial inequality comparing the contexts of Brazil, where Professor Roth-Gordon has conducted research for 30 years, and the US. Now is a particularly important time to delve into the topic of race and learn more about why the current administration is working so hard to ban discussion of these topics in schools, in businesses, in government offices, and in research. This is a chance to learn about this important topic together with interested community members and guided by a Univeristy of Arizona faculty member who teaches introductory classes on the topic.
Instuctor Bio
Jen Roth-Gordon is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona where she has taught racial and social justice classes to thousands of undergraduate and graduate students since 2004. Her first book, Race and the Brazilian Body: Blackness, Whiteness, and Everyday Language in Rio de Janeiro, interrogates racial inequality and common beliefs in the superiority of whiteness and has been taught in university classes around the country. She is currently working on her second book on white middle-class parenting in the context of anti-blackness and racial violence. She has a multi-racial family with a white spouse, one white biological son, an adopted African American son, and an adopted African American daughter; all three of them were bar/bat mitzvahed at Temple Emanu-El/Kol Ami.
