Past Sessions
Tuesday, January 13, 2026 24 Tevet 5786 - 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM - Kol Ami
Arizona faces water challenges due to growing population and economic activity, coupled with reduced Colorado River water flows and over-drafting of groundwater. The presentation will explain how water situations differ across Arizona, the Tucson region, and rural communities. Innovation in water policies and management and the role of individuals and organizations will be presented.

Everyone is invited to join us for this multi-part course. You are welcome to join for one or all three talks.

Upcoming Sessions:

Part 2- Arizona’s Climate Story: Variability, Change, and What Comes Next

  • Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026

  • Presented by Dr. Michael Crimmins Climate Scientist, University of Arizona

Arizona’s reputation for extreme heat and extended droughts belies the remarkable diversity of landscapes and ecosystems found across the state. Steep elevation changes create sharp local climate gradients, sustaining everything from cool, high-elevation mixed conifer forests to sun-baked desert scrub in the lowlands. This interplay between rugged terrain and variable climate helps make Arizona one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the American West.

The state experiences two distinct wet seasons: the summer monsoon, marked by fast-moving, intense thunderstorms, and the winter season, characterized by gentler rains and high-elevation snowfall. These patterns shape how water is delivered and stored in soils, with significant consequences for ecological communities and natural resource management. Large-scale shifts in Pacific Ocean temperatures further influence storm tracks across the region, producing cycles of multi-year wet spells and extended drought.

In recent decades, global climate change has begun altering many of these long-standing patterns. This presentation examines the historical forces behind Arizona’s climate variability and explores how they may evolve in a warming climate.

Part 3- Water Issues In Our Community

  • Tuesday, March 10, 2026

  • Presented by Chairman Austin G. Nunez, San Xavier District, Tohono O'odham Nation

We need a guaranteed supply of Colorado River Water through the Central Arizona Project. This water is used by us for agriculture and for maintaining our riparian restoration site. The water supply is threatened by climate change, providing us with less water and less for all who depend on the CAP water.

Future potential contamination of our groundwater supply from the copper mine south of and adjacent to our reservation community. The mine tailings are not lined, so the chemicals used in copper ore processing will eventually leak into our groundwater supply, including sulfates. We use groundwater for consumption and daily use.
